Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
As the 2024 general elections reach their final stage, citizens across 57 Lok Sabha constituencies in seven states and one Union territory are casting their votes today. This marks the seventh and last phase of voting.
In West Bengal, 9 out of the state’s 42 seats are in play today. Constituencies like Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Diamond Harbour, Jadavpur, Kolkata Dakshin, and Kolkata North are in fray.
These seats, including those in Kolkata and its surrounding suburbs, were all previously secured by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2019.
The Trinamool Congress faces a critical test today, with several prominent leaders contesting. Among them are party general secretary and Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, along with seasoned politicians Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Saugata Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, and Mala Ray. The constituency of Basirhat, which includes the assembly segment of Sandeshkhali, is under intense scrutiny. This TMC stronghold is currently embroiled in allegations of atrocities against women by party members, with an ongoing legal battle adding to the tension.
